Questions and answers

Why hasn't my race been called?

Because the margin is smaller than the votes still to be counted. News organizations call a race only when the trailing candidate can no longer catch up.

Why do some states take so long?

Mail ballots. 15 states and D.C. count ballots that arrive after Election Day if they were sent on time, and some states can't open mail ballots until polls close. Provisional ballots also have to be checked, and voters get a chance to fix signature problems.

Does a slow count mean something's wrong?

No. Counting carefully takes time, especially in big states that vote mostly by mail, such as California, which usually takes weeks to finish.

Are late-arriving ballots still being counted?

Yes, in the states that allow it. In June 2026 the Supreme Court ruled (Watson v. RNC) that states may count mail ballots sent on time that arrive after Election Day.
