Questions and answers

What is the civics test like?

It's part of the naturalization interview. Under the 2025 version, the officer asks up to 20 questions from an official list of 128, and you need 12 right. It's spoken: there are no answer choices.

How many questions does this practice test use?

120 of the 128. We left out the 8 whose answer depends on where you live or who holds an office now (your senators and representative, your governor, your state capital, the president, the vice president, the Speaker of the House and the Chief Justice).

Are there special rules for older applicants?

Yes. People 65 or older who have been permanent residents for 20 years or more study only 20 marked questions; the officer asks 10 and you need 6 right. See USCIS for the details.

Where's the official list?

At uscis.gov/citizenship, with all 128 questions and the accepted answers, in English and other languages. Answers that change after elections are updated there too.
