Taxes

Income taxes, a billionaire wealth tax and property-tax breaks are on the ballot in 2026. Tax measures often come in competing pairs, where the one with more Yes votes wins if both pass.

What's on the ballot

  • California Proposition 40: Yes would levy a one-time 5% tax on fortunes over $1 billion to fund health care, food assistance and education. Propositions 41 and 42 compete with it: if either passes with more votes, it could block the wealth tax.
  • Colorado Proposition 136: Yes would cap state income tax rates at 4.4%. Colorado Amendment 87 would instead create a graduated income tax, with higher rates on higher incomes, for schools, health care and child care.
  • Washington Initiative 645: Yes would repeal the state's tax on household income over $1 million and bar state and local income taxes.
  • Florida Amendment 3: Yes would raise the homestead exemption from non-school property taxes, to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with limits on local spending.

Questions and answers

What does a Yes or No vote mean?

A Yes vote approves the change the measure describes; a No vote keeps current law, unless the measure says otherwise (in a referendum on a law already passed, for example, Yes keeps the law and No repeals it).

How many votes does a measure need to pass?

A simple majority in most states. Some require more to change the constitution: Florida needs 60%, and in some states an amendment must pass in two separate elections.

When will results be known?

Measures are counted with the rest of the ballot. Lopsided ones are called on election night; close ones can take days. This page updates on its own as results come in.

Where can I read the exact ballot wording?
