Housing and energy

Housing costs and energy choices reach the ballot through zoning, environmental review and rules on natural gas.

What's on the ballot

  • California Proposition 45: Yes would speed up environmental review for certain projects, including housing.
  • Massachusetts Question 7: Yes would limit how large a lot towns can require for single-family homes.
  • Colorado Amendment 82: Yes would create a constitutional right to buy and sell natural gas for cooking and heating.

Questions and answers

What does a Yes or No vote mean?

A Yes vote approves the change the measure describes; a No vote keeps current law, unless the measure says otherwise (in a referendum on a law already passed, for example, Yes keeps the law and No repeals it).

How many votes does a measure need to pass?

A simple majority in most states. Some require more to change the constitution: Florida needs 60%, and in some states an amendment must pass in two separate elections.

When will results be known?

Measures are counted with the rest of the ballot. Lopsided ones are called on election night; close ones can take days. This page updates on its own as results come in.

Where can I read the exact ballot wording?

In your state's official voter guide. Our how-to-vote page links to every state. How to vote →
