Votes vs. seats
House seats are won district by district, so a party's share of seats rarely matches its share of the national vote. Here's how far apart they are.
Votes are being counted: this page updates every minute.
Why don't they match?
Winning a district by one vote earns the same seat as winning it by 100,000, so a party whose voters are packed into fewer districts piles up "wasted" votes. District lines, uncontested seats and turnout all play a part. On the vote side, some states leave unopposed candidates off the ballot, so those seats add no votes at all.
